The Portland Timbers, are at a 1-1 draw with the Chivas USA team as of last Saturday when they faces Chivas USA at Providence Park.
“We want to win. We are used to winning. So I think anything that is not a win, especially at home, is going to feel like a loss. When you’re on the road, you’ll swallow a draw. You’re not playing for a draw, but if you get one, it’s not a bad result at all, but at home it’s important to get three points as much as possible,” said Caleb Porter, the Timbers Head Coach.
Will Johnson, captain of the Timbers, drew first blood with his first goal of the season, it was not enough to stop the Goats forward, Erick Torres, from scoring later in the match.
Torres’ goal in the 79th was his fifth goal of the season. Leandro Barrera passed to Torres after receiving a long pass down the left wing and crossing to Torres.
On the heels of that goal, Portland scrambled to score. They found their chance with Johnson’s free kick from outside the area, but Johnson’s luck had run out and the ball hit the right post rather than the goal.
Stout playing lent few chances to either team for a second goal, but Timbers Maximiliano Urruti and Darlington Nagbe both attempted some clever maneuvering at the top of the penalty area in the seventh minute.
On a missed Chivas USA clearance, Urruti snagged a loose ball and passed to Nagbe, who managed a pass past two Chivas USA defenders to Johnson. This pass set up Johnson’s first goal of the season as he sliced it past Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.
Portland’s second and third attempts by Urruti and Johnson in the 25th and 35th minutes were unsuccessful, though this did little to deter them.
“It’s a big part of our philosophy, to control as much of the game as possible, dictate the flow with possession of the ball. I’m not sure why we gave the ball away so much tonight… Maybe it’s because we are trying to score, forcing things a bit… After we got the goal, I thought we made it far more difficult on ourselves than it needed to be. We defended more than we needed to because we kept giving the ball away,” said Porter.
Chivas USA took their chance in the first half of the game when former Timbers player, Andrew Jean-Baptiste attempted to score, but the shot went high.
Chivas USA found more openings in the second half along with their possession. Thomas McNamara set up a shot for Torres in the 50th minute of the game and another shot for Carlos Alvarez in the 61st minute, but both players failed their attempts. McNamara was stretchered off the field in the 65th minute due to an apparent knee injury.
Portland travels next to Real Salt Lake for a rematch of 2013s Western Conference Championship on Saturday. Chivas USA will return home to host the Seattle Sounders, also on Saturday.
