After a droll first hour, the Timbers and the Galaxy played out a blockbuster last half hour, with four goals in total, with both teams taking the lead and then surrendering as such. After some of the dullest soccer you are likely to see this season, the game blew into life when Marcelo Sarvas fired home for the Galaxy to put them in front in the 65th minute.
Thankfully, Timbers star man Diego Valeri equalized before Jorge Villafana banged the Timbers in front in a space of three minutes. They held the lead until late into the matchwhen Rauwshan McKenzie scored an unfortunate Own Goal after a period of tough pressure from the Galaxy to bring the score back to 2-2 and ensure the teams would at least share the points.
This was a sell-out crowd for the Galaxy and their fans will be impressed with the teams ability to battle back in adversity. With the Timbers now unbeaten in five away games, their fans are beginning to dream that the future might be that little bit brighter.
Both teams now sit on 21 points, one point behind the Vancouver Whitecaps, who play the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night. The first hour of this game was as exciting as the weather the team was playing in, with conditions best described as “muggy” stopping the game get any real flow or style. With the game primarily being a midfield battle for the first hour, the Galaxy will be disappointed following an exciting start to the game.
Indeed, they could have been two goals up if it was not for the inspired Donovan Ricketts, who kept out RoI legend Robbie Keane in a one-on-one, one of the Irishmans most recognizable chances to finish. Sarvas then hit the post in the 15th minute, following a Keane shot being blocked.
The best chance that the Timbers had in the first half was a missed chance for Fanendo Adi at the near post after good work from Valeri down the right wing. Overall, both teams will be happy enough with a point after effectively wasting the first hour of the game. With the Revolution up next for the Galaxy and the Sounders for the Timbers, the points are very much still to pay for in a tight MLS season!.
