CORVALLIS, Ore. – When Stefen Romero makes his debut with the Seattle Mariners, the former Beaver will become the 26th player in Oregon State history to compete at the Major League level.

Romero is one of three former Oregon State players on MLB Opening Day rosters, joining the New York Yankees’ Jacoby Ellsbury and the Chicago Cubs’ Darwin Barney.

Romero, who most of last season at Triple-A Tacoma, batting .277 with 11 home runs, is the first former Beaver in a Mariner uniform since Jamie Burke played for Seattle from 2007-09. Romero was selected by the club in the 12th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

He’s joined by Ellsbury and Barney, both now seasoned veterans at the game’s highest level. Ellsbury is in his first year with the Yankees after playing the last seven seasons for the Boston Red Sox, claiming World Series titles in 2007 and 2013. He batted .298 with 31 doubles, nine home runs and 52 stolen bases last season.

Barney, meanwhile, joined the Cubs as a rookie in 2010 and has manned second base ever since. He was saddled with a .208 average last season but did hit 25 doubles with seven home runs and 41 runs batted in. He also made just four errors in 141 games, posting a .993 fielding percentage.
