The Future Now concert that I saw was in the good ol’ town of Portland. The concert itself was pretty normal, and I got my dose of Portland weirdness from the guy riding a unicycle with a spear and tribal makeup outside of Rose Quarter. The concert itself was bold to say the least in its overall practicality. For the majority of the concert, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato took shifts singing and even joined forces in “Close.”
The song choice was definitely not disappointing. It featured both of the artist’s’ most currently popular songs, including Nick’s “Jealous” and “Chains,” and Demi’s “Cool for the Summer” and “Confident.” Even some of Demi Lovato’s older songs sung, such as “Skyscraper” and “Heart Attack.” Yes, the 2011 me was screaming inside and out (it’s a concert, calm down). It was like listening to your radio tunes, except live. Unlike most concerts where the artists just promote their new CD and many fans have not had a chance to listen to the songs enough, everyone knew the songs that were sung and most everyone was singing along.
From the start, the flawless voice of Nick Jonas sounded just like it would on CD. Demi’s voice was a little shaky at the start, but quickly overcame it with her strong, powerful vocals. Although there were a few incidents where the artist’s voice was hard to understand over the music, the sound crew was quick to fix this. The sound quality itself was pretty crystal with a nice bass.
As for the visuals, it was pretty much how you would expect any concert to be. Strobing lights flashing across the audience with a big screen to show videos or of the artists singing. The nice thing about the screen was that there was a larger panoramic screen in the middle with two side screens, but other than that there were no special visuals that made the concert distinguishable. A plus side to this was that the “oohs” and “ahs” of the crowd were centered around the actual talent of the artist’s voices.
There weren’t a lot of costume changes throughout the concert. Nick’s attire was fairly casual, while Demi’s outfit was much more scandalous. Overall the concert was very atypical, but the real thing that made the performance extraordinary was the song choice and the positive vibe from the artists. Not to mention a sweet happy birthday sung from Nick to Demi.
